Okay I saw Narnia yesterday - who out there is making Narnia costumes?

I quite like the white witches battle gear - it's my idea of what Bodicia might have looked like - was she(Tilda Swinton) wearing a chainmail full length dress or were my eyes playing tricks on me?

It looked like chainmaille to me. Is this a costume on your list Jo? lmao

I saw the movie on Monday, and thought it was marvellous! I particularly liked Susan's green dress and the coronation dress, but I'm not sure if I will get a chance to make either of them anytime soon smile.gif

Yep, I reckon it was full length chain mail. It took me months to make one strip of chain mail, so I really cant see myself doing anyhting on this costume soon... I would love to though!
(I got a white witch want for Christmas)
I loved the coronation dress too. or maybe the grown up Susan or Lucy dresses???
Oh well, more costumes to add to the list...

This chainmaille dress I might consider doing in a lightweight metal because I would not be allowed to fight in it anyway. The Wardrobe Door seems to have a few good shots of the battle gear - nothing close up or large that I know of - anyone out there found better larger high res pictures?

Yes its somewhere on my costume list now Starfire....I'm hopeless LOL

We saw this the other day, quite a good film. I don't remember ever reading the books, and haven't watched more than a few minutes of the BBC (mini?)series.

I was checking this one out myself, as Kat is interested in doing one of the White Witch costumes as well (sounds like ALL costuming women are! wink.gif )

The top was either metal plate or leather.
The collar region was covered by a shaggy fur (possibly Aslan's shaved mane?)
Interesting headpiece, from memory it was a stag type thing? Reindeer perhaps?

Yes ..this web site which is in our links section seems to do a fairly good blow by blow description of each costume on the movie including the White Witch Battle Garb
http://costumes.narniaweb.com/
I'm still looking for better high res close ups - someone out there must have them stashed somewhere - I hope they can share!

I am making Jadis' Battle Garb in full chain mail.

I know it will take a while, and I have started, I just have to wait for an email from one of my old medieval mates in Nelson.

I got 'Cameras in Narnia' and looked at the pictures it has of the Dress, and they are good. And I found that while she was on her Chariot(sp), they didnt have the mail all the way round. It was like whoa!
The White Witch Costumes, the book shows what kind of material was used, a lace created from raw silk and raw merino wool, coloured and felted, stitched and partly burned out to make 'witch lace'
(I also liked the green pants!lol)

The top is said to be Black Plate, but I cant quite see the back of it.

CL

Watch yourself doing maille in light-weight materials. Aluminium apparantly gets to the stage of not being able to support its own weight and the links start splitting. Some SCA guys have gotten around this with larger rings... but... ick! I took a photo of the comparison pieces if anyone is interested in seeing it. The real stuff looks oh so much better.

I agree with you however this is way way bigger than even a halberk - I really think you would have difficulty walking in the white witches gear if you do it all in real steel its a dress not battle gear so there will be alot alot alot of links...heavy (and I am a real steel diehard normally - you know that!)

Please show the pieces here I would like to see them

Just a place to put pics of your gear.started a chainmail coif recently for no real reason so thought I'd post a progress pic.

The rows are built up around a centre ring with additional rings added about every third row to build it out to full width.

I thought that this might be an appropriate topic to put this since I cannot remember where ladysilverspider originally asked for this image.

This is the difference between spring steel mail and aluminium mail and as I said previously, in order to get aluminium mail at a strength where it can support its own weight, the size of the rings is so large it starts to look not so nice.

I had a ruler next to this image, but it didn't show up so good after reducing the size, so I drew out the measurements from it so that you can see the scale. Hope it helps those who are considering doing mail for costume.

(It didn't attach my pic first time around so I will try a different way.)

Thats a very good an visual example - hell looks like a I will have to consider plastic or the real thing if I ever make the white witch battle gear - not aluminum. Are you making your coif in aluminium Reactor? I have one in spring steel..its very nice ohmy.gif). I guess I should figure out how to link these posts with the white witch battle gear which is how the chainmail subject came up.

(short break as the admin)

I seem to have managed to get all the mail conversation into this file though technically mail making is historical I guess it would come under fantasy if you are not using steel..or am I now just being pedantic?

My coif is being made in steel,it's galvanised at the moment so it's a bit shiny.I'll probably strip the zinc off after it's made with sodium hydroxide to give it a natural steel look.
